Using Music to Focus. Writing Prompt # 11

Now that’s a serious picture, isn’t it? Business-like?

I think every creative artist, writer, musician could use that word in a context that does not involve the process of making art. Of course, when we’re in the flow, creating comes easily. The question is, how do you get into the stream?

To help your mind quiet and focus, I often use music. Here’s how:

1) Become a smoothie. Dance around the room and when you are exhausted, have a seat. All the extra energy and random thoughts that had been running through your head will be smoothed out as if put through a blender.

2) Create or listen to a repetitive rhythm. If you have a drum, pick it up and play the same rhythm over and over again. You can also find frame drum beats online if you do not have a drum.  Once all thoughts have been replaced by the sound of a single note, sit quietly for just a few minutes more. See what the drum has done for your body and mind.

3) Sound Healing. Music really does change our mood and quiet the mind so that it can focus. Don’t take my word for it, there is science behind  that fact. Jonathan Goldman, Don Campbell both have books and CDs that I have found very useful. Percussion tends to be very healing. Try my husband’s group, Talujon at www.talujon.com, for something out of the ordinary. I also recommend, my friend, River Guerguerian’s music for inspirational sounds and focus. http://guerguerian.com/trance.html

Set time aside this week to make your own music before writing. Think about what you need. Do you have a lot of extra energy from the holiday madness that you need to sooth? Try the single drum exercise in a quiet room.  Do you need a change of pace and healing? Or does dancing wildly around the room sound like just the right amount of silliness to help you from getting too serious? Try what feels right for YOU.

I would love to hear about your dance. What worked for you? What helped you focus?
